2010 Employee Recognition

2010 Employee/Nurse of the Month

December 2010

Employee
Courtney Silvay
Courtney is an integral part of the team at Northside Hospital.  This employee is quite creative and is very helpful to all departments.  She has worked as an interim director of her department while recruitment efforts were underway for a new director. She also coordinates the volunteer program and h2u program for the hospital.  Her smiling face and positive attitude are always welcomed by employees, physicians, patients and visitors.  She has a “can-do” attitude when it comes to new projects and ideas.  Recently, she went above and beyond assisting the activities of the American Heart Walk where the host raised over $38,000.00. She is active in community service - volunteering with the Lealman Community Association, Police Athletic League, and Blanton Elementary mentoring.

Nurse
Rebecca Smolik, RN
Becca has been with Northside Hospital since she was about 17 years old, starting out as a PCA and working up to her current status as an RN. She is a good team player stepping into her new role as a RN, a good role model and mentor for new employees. She will fill in as charge nurse when needed, always lending a helping hand to those who need help whether it be with a patient, a family member, or needing help with the computer she stops and helps everyone in need.  She is always thinking about safety in our work area changing the area to prevent accidents, hand washing is always a plus for Becca. She could probable do an in-service on that one! Becca is worthy of Nurse of the Month because she is great to work with, always has her teammates back in the time of need, is dependable, and is my backup if I need an extra pair of hands at the desk. I have watched her mature over the years and in my opinion is very much worthy of this award.

November 2010

Employee
David Carmichael, III

David is a great guy and a joy to work beside each day. He comes to work faithfully and brings fun and laughter to our Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation patient classes. He provides a balance of skills in our department as an exercise specialist with both exercise training and patient education.  David has a special gift bringing out the best in people, and his patients give their best effort with his direction. David has been flexible working in many different environments. He has worked with the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab outpatients, and also goes to the hospital working side by side with Physical Therapy providing Phase I ambulation and exercise direction for the open heart patients. David is motivated by a desire to give his best for our patients and our facility. He even comes in on many weekends to make sure that the open heart patients exercise consistently. Everyone I know like to work with David. I’m personally glad he’s here because he provides high quality care each day. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition and I hope that you will acknowledge him in this way.

Nurse
Keri Thomasson, RN

I would like to thank you all, and especially Keri, for the unbelievable great care and kindness you afforded me during my same day surgical event.  Your professionalism and superb care can only be described as the BEST! On a scale of 0 thru 10, you and your team get a 10 1/2.  Please thank all the others who cared for me as well. I would come to your hospital in the future for any and all my healthcare needs. Again, thank you so much.

October 2010

Employee
Sylvia Newton
Sylvia Newton works hard, is always pleasant and adds so many touches to the patients as well as coworkers. Many patients and families have commented on the towels and wash clothes – How nice they look and it’s a “Special Touch”, one family stated, “It feels like someone cares we are here.” One patient I had was young, was disheveled upon arriving to CCU. Sylvia and “Bernie”, the ICU nurse, cleaned the patient’s hair and Sylvia lovingly braided it. The patient’s mom visited and cried that someone cared enough to make her daughter presentable for her children and family members – sometimes its many of those “little things” that are so big and mean so so much – and they go un-noticed. Sylvia is a gem and an asset to this hospital.

Nurse
Laura Pemberton
On Sept. 18, Laura Pemberton had to stay late in order to complete her documentation.  She had an exceptionally heavy load including a discharge, a deaf patient with family issues and 4 pages of lab orders, a new stroke admission with a demanding family and a Rapid Response, plus 2 other patients. Throughout it all Laura maintained her cool, asked for assistance when necessary, and effectively managed her patient care and family expectations. Thanks for hanging in there, Laura!  You did a great job!

September 2010

Employee
Bobby Pelletier
Bobby Pelletier has one of the best work ethics of anyone I have every worked with. He tackles each job with a great attitude. He always takes pride in his work as we have seen in the improvements to our hallways. He has a genuine desire to make Northside Hospital a better place for our patients and staff.

Nurse
Ruth Arbuckle, RN
I would like to nominate Ruth Arbuckle as nurse of the month. She is always so caring with her patients and pleasant with her coworkers. She is an excellent nurse and is a mentor to her peers. She devised a binder for the neurointerventional materials, i.e. physician’s orders, consents, etc. which can be utilized for staff and has educational materials for the patients!! I think Ruth is a great ICU resource and an asset to Northside Hospital!!!

August 2010

Employee
Jamie Woods

I would like to nominate Jamie Woods from the lab for Employee of the Month. Jamie Woods is the Point of Care Coordinator for the hospital. Earlier this year, the point of care has expanded to include CT and Interventional Radiology. This has required Jamie’s already fill role to expand. She has demonstrated excellent customer relations be it with physicians, vendors, or nursing coordinators. She has worked diligently with the nursing coordinators to get timely results by docking the blood glucose meter and working with vendors to improve glycemic index software to improve tracking of those glucose measures enabling implementation Jamie possesses a “can do” attitude always willing to “find a way” to get a job done. She makes herself available to meet with Daren at the Nurses clinical council meeting bimonthly. She regularly meets with physicians and nursing providing education, support and encouragement during the expansion of the point of care. She responds with kindness and professionalism under pressure of deadlines. She possesses a “can do” attitude always willing to “find a way” to get a job done. Anyone who knows this employee knows she is always smiling. Her positive attitude is infectious. Despite being very busy she will take time to sweetly greet you and ask about your day. She complements others regularly and in her humility she is always willing to highlight other’s contributions before her own. Because of Jamie’s persistent work on the point of care testing, Northside has been able to increase turnaround time for results thus providing quicker, accurate diagnosis and response, improving physician and patient satisfaction with less delay in treatment.

Nurse
Kathleen Kampman, RN

I would like to nominate one of Northside’s Charge Nurses on 3 West.  For the last nineteen years, we have been blessed to have Kathleen’s dedicated services. She is incredibly loyal to her co-workers, patients and physicians. Her ability to multitask, excellent time management and sense of humor is an asset on 3 West. You can always count on Kathy to call in critical lab values, admit a patient if everyone is drowning, take report on a patient or answer a doctor’s call. Kathleen is very engaged at work, assists management with initiatives and is a wonderful resource to all. Please consider her for Nurse of the Month.

July 2010

Employee
Angie Percy
Angie Percy is a very dedicated Northside employee; she handles the duties and responsibilities of many projects and task for all of the nursing department and always with a smile. Angie readily assists with any facility project when asked and is appreciated by everyone for always having a bright smile and positive demeanor. Angie encounters many of our patients and visitors as the first person they come in contact with in administration and always ensures these folks are taken care of in a timely fashion. Despite the many different tasks she performs Angie manages priorities well and always so pleasantly and graciously. Angie is a positive representative of Northside hospital.

Nurse
Jennifer Allen, RN

Attitude: Jenni takes her patients conditions very seriously, but her quick smile and empathic touch puts patients at ease.

Communication: What a please it is to walk into Jennifer’s patients room and find the entire plan of care outlined on the large white board for the patient, families and visitors to see and follow.

Sense of Ownership: Works hard to ensure that SCIP plans are followed (i.e. a.m. blood sugars within defined limit son post-open heart patients.

Teamwork: On a recent evening I stayed late to help with a critically ill post-op patient, Jennifer pitched in without being asked to ensure the safety of the other patients in the unit while 3 nurses helped out with the critically ill patient.  She passed meds, gave education and sought to meet their needs even though she wasn’t assigned to them.

Privacy/Confidentiality: When caring for a dying patient one night, Jennifer sought clarification from the health care surrogate regarding the patients advanced directives. There were many family members from out of town calling in for updates and information.  It was established who could get this information by Jennifer and the patient’s confidentiality was preserved.

Safety/Awareness: Jennifer always keeps her patients safety as a top priority. She checks labs, radiology results and vital signs as part of her assessment and is quick to alert team members of any variations that would impact the patient’s plan of care i.e, initiating calls to get orders for electrolyte protocols in response to abnormal lab values.

These “standards of performance” is demonstrated by Jennifer everyday and why she deserves to be Nurse of the Month.

June 2010

Employee
Michaelena Olive
This employee has dedicated over 20 years of service to HCA.  She has worked at St. Petersburg General and now Northside Hospital. I can’t begin to explain all of her outstanding qualities. She comes in every day and puts a smile on her face as she walks through the doors.  She is polite and always willing to help others, even when there doesn’t seem to be enough time.  When her Director asks her to do extra work she never complains.  She helps the nurses when the office is very busy, without being asked.  She is a team player.  Serving the public can be very difficult at times but this employee does a wonderful job at answering questions and explaining instructions to new employees and outside business clients.  She has been a strong pillar in our department and for our division.

Nurse
Rachida Jamil, RN
As a CT Tech, I have gone to the floor on several occasions and found a particular nurse to be very helpful. She always has a smiling face. She is very personable with all our patients. Once while visiting NSU, I couldn’t get anyone’s attention concerning getting a patients IV plugged in and this nurse offered to help me.  She has helped our department on many occasions with patient’s that aren’t even hers. She is continuously a bright and shining star on the floor! Her standards of performance exceed the expectations and think she should be recognized for her hard work and dedication to her co-workers as well our patients.

May 2010

Employee
Sandra Albritton

She updates the nurses and the doctors on patient status in a timely manner and always thinks outside the box always. She prioritizes patient’s progress and comfort level. She not only follows orders, but she thinks and uses good judgment at all times. I, along with the other nurses and doctors, never have to worry when working with her. She always has our back and we work in synchrony.

Nurse
Catrina Cullen, RN

This nurse is one of the best contributors to CCU; she is ever present when patients are in need. She is always proactive in her care of patients, seeking opportunities to improve both medical and customer satisfaction outcomes. She willingly assists when needed to do charge on PCU and always with a smile and cheerful attitude. She is truly a team player who always expresses a positive and caring attitude for her patients as well as everyone around her every day. She attributes in making CCU a better place to work. She is always professional and is a good role model for others. We are lucky to have her on our team!

April 2010

Employee
Catherine Goodison

I’ve had the opportunity to work with this employee on many committees over the past 9 years. She was instrumental in helping with any new process changes regarding new orders and new forms, and always with a smile and a response of “How can I do more?” Her attention to detail and perfection is part of what makes her unique in her role. Rather than take a chance or put off a project, she would always call to clarify what she was to do so that it would be done right the first time. She is a wonderful asset to Northside Hospital and an all-around great employee.

Nurse
Karyn Ryan, LPN

She is consistently in a great mood, smiles for and with the patients. She is excellent at telling the patient what is going on and keeping the patient included in the plan of care. If she makes a mistake she is the first to admit it and professionally rectify the situation. She is an excellent member of any team she works on. She works on task, as well as gives direction with ease. With little privacy in the hospital she makes sure to gives the patient as much dignity and respect as humanly possible. She is conscious of the rules and upholds them to ensure safety for patients, visitors & hospital staff alike. She’s an excellent nurse, loves what she does and is a complete asset to any team she works with.

March 2010

Employee
Lynne Guisinger

This employee has been polite, friendly and calm for the close to 2 years I’ve been coming to Northside, nearly daily. She is efficient and helpful and goes the extra mile to answer my many questions. She supports the case management team and spear-heads charity drives, etc. conducted by the hospital. She provides privacy in guidance on faxing documents. She represents the hospital with a clear, honest and non-judgmental manner, providing consistency in a sometimes very changeable world.

Nurse
Elizabeth Bowman, RN

"On January 19, 2010, I had a heart cath which then resulted in my Triple Bypass Surgery on January 20, 2010. I just wanted to thank everyone who cared for me in the lab, then following surgery. I especially would like to thank my nurse in CVICU. I have complemented her nursing skills and personality to everyone I know including Dr. DeFrain last week at my first follow up visit. She had such a calming way about her and was funny on top of everything. She certainly has been given the perfect job for all of us scared to death patients. I just can’t thank her enough. The 3rd floor staff were also very kind and helpful post surgery. Many of the nurses took their time to not only explain things, but to make sure one understood what they were explaining.

"Thank you again and please tell my nurse in CVICU I’m making it and just started rehab on March 1, 2010.

February 2010

Employee
Michael Roehl

"Since this employee came on board at Northside, he has focused on delivering excellent customer service to the staff and our guests. He prides himself in being that “can do” person that will get the job done all while keeping a smile on his face. He always goes the extra mile. An example of this is when a patients son called in from Atlanta requesting that we help get his elderly father set up with Skype (video conferencing) so he could check in on his family member from afar. This employee jumped at the chance to help our guests and his family be taking them step by step through the process until they were connected through the magic of the internet! This is just one example of how focused he is on taking care of the Northside family. There is task too big or too small…he treats each request with the same care and focus, this is why I would like to nominate him for Employee of the Month.

Nurse
Jill Epperson, RN

Our unit has the bubbliest, most energetic and is best patient advocate nurse at Northside and we feel she is deserving of the “Nurse of the Month” award. She is always willing to train the new nurses that are hired and serves has an excellent mentor as well as being a preceptor of SPC students. She is always willing to step in and help the other nurses with a positive attitude and genuine sense of care for both our patients as well as the staff on our unit. She does a great job as relief charge nurse when needed. Additionally, she is kind, caring, and takes time with each and every one of her patients. She is a tremendous asset to Northside Hospital and we love her.

January 2010

Employee
Jane Luckett
Jane Luckett has worked at Northside since 1993. She started as an OR Aide/Transporter and after several years, became a Sterile Processing Tech. She has remained in SPD ever since and is a very, very valuable and appreciated member of our team. Jane begins her shift at the crack of dawn and can be seen on all the nursing units picking up equipment to be cleaned. Then her duties include testing all the sterilizers before the OR schedule starts, then cleaning, wrapping and sterilizing instruments throughout the day. Jane has a wonderful, positive attitude and takes pride in her work. She does more than her share of work in the word “teamwork” and is always dependable and thorough.

A lot of people outside the OR don’t know Janie, but if they use a sterile instrument tray, Janie she is probably the one that prepared it. We are extremely fortunate to have such a terrific hard worker – who certainly deserves this award.

Nurse
Charlene Roberts, RN

"I wanted to make Charlene Roberts is recognized for her performance and attitude last night. She was pulled from PCU to be in charge on NSU, and graciously accepted the float. However, due to a scheduling mishap, there was no monitor tech on NSU either and when I called her last night to discuss this, she told me she had made the decision to sit in the back and watch the monitors too.

"This morning I made the effort to make sure I met her so I could tell her how impressed I was with her leadership and her attitude. She told me “that’s what teamwork is.” This is an employee who will set the tone for any unit she works. Please recognize this employee for her dedication and teamwork.
